WHAT YOU CAN DO DURING A DENTAL EMERGENCY

Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any trapped debris. Avoid placing aspirin or painkillers directly on the gum or tooth as this can cause irritation. Contact your dentist for an appointment as soon as possible to determine the cause of the toothache.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown (top) and rinse it gently with water, being careful not to touch the root. Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket if possible, holding it in place by gently biting down on a clean cloth. If you can't reinsert it, place the tooth in milk or a tooth preservation product and seek immediate dental care.

Abscess or Swelling

Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to help alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling. Avoid applying heat to the outside of your face, as this can worsen swelling. Contact your dentist immediately if you notice signs of a dental abscess, such as severe pain, swelling, or fever, as it requires prompt treatment to prevent complications.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If possible, save any broken tooth fragments and bring them to your dentist. Avoid chewing on the affected area and seek dental care promptly to prevent further damage or infection.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown becomes dislodged, try to keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side of the mouth. You can use temporary dental cement or sugar-free gum to temporarily cover the exposed tooth surface until you can see your dentist for repair.
